At Underglass Custom Framing in San Francisco, we often work with artwork that already carries its own story. This pirate treasure map print came with distressed edges and burnt areas that give it the look of aged parchment, so the goal was simple: design a frame that supports the character of the piece without overpowering it.

For this project, we chose a satin black cube frame with a clean, contemporary profile. The frame gives the artwork structure while letting the map remain the visual focus.

To complement the yellowed tones of the print, we added an off-white coarse linen fabric mat. The woven texture works beautifully with the aged look of the map and adds subtle depth when viewed up close.

Floating the Artwork for Dramatic Depth

Because parts of the paper had been intentionally burnt and distressed, we wanted those details to remain visible. Instead of covering the edges with a mat opening, we floated the map on the fabric mat.

Floating creates a small shadow around the edges of the artwork, highlighting the irregular shape of the paper and emphasizing its character. The result is a presentation that feels clean and contemporary while still honoring the adventurous, worn quality of the piece.
