Some pieces don’t ask for much change.
This sepia etching, Backyard by Gillian Pederson-Krag (2001), already holds a clear tonal range. Because of that, we chose to stay within it.
In our custom framing San Francisco work, this approach often leads to a more resolved result.
We float-mounted the piece on a slightly less saturated sepia mat. This gives the artwork space while keeping the palette consistent.
At the same time, we paired it with a darker frame. This adds definition without introducing a new color.
We also selected a profile with a small bead detail. It brings in a bit of variation without shifting the overall tone.
As a result, the framing supports the piece without pulling attention away from it.
Custom Framing San Francisco – Working with What’s Already There

Our approach to custom framing in San Francisco often starts with observation. We look at what the artwork already does well.
For example, when a piece is built around a single tone, adding contrast can feel unnecessary.
Instead, staying within that range can create continuity. It allows the artwork to remain steady and clear.
At Underglass Custom Framing in San Francisco’s Castro District, we make these decisions case by case. Each piece leads the process.
Because of this, custom framing in San Francisco becomes less about adding and more about refining.
Museum-Quality Materials
As with all of our custom framing in San Francisco, we use conservation materials to protect the artwork.
For this piece, we used:
- Archival mounting techniques for long-term support
- Museum glass for clarity and minimal reflection
- 99% UV protection to help preserve the artwork over time
These choices help maintain the condition and appearance of the piece.
