Animation cel framing in San Francisco is something we do regularly at Underglass Custom Picture Framing. Collectors of cartoon and animation art know what they have. And they know it deserves a proper home on the wall.
This piece is a 1994 Warner Bros. limited edition cel titled Peace and Carrots. It features Bugs Bunny and Marvin the Martian and is signed by legendary animator Chuck Jones. It is the kind of piece that says something clear about the person who owns it.
The frame: two tone blue and gold
We started, as always, with the art. The cel has calm, cool tones with punches of color throughout. So we chose a two tone frame, a glossy blue with visible brushstrokes on the face and a gold textured layer on the side and the lip of the frame.
The lip is the part of the frame that overhangs the glass. When it catches the light it adds a finishing detail that feels considered without announcing itself. The blue and gold echo the artwork’s palette directly. Nothing was chosen at random.
The double mat: red and blue reveals
Next came the mat. We went with a red and blue double mat, each color a thin reveal that frames the cel within the frame. The red pulls the warmer tones in the artwork forward. The blue ties back to the frame itself. Together they make the characters really punch through.
Double mats like this are one of the most effective tools in custom framing. Used well, they add depth, color connection and a sense of intention to the whole design.
Framing for collectors
