Close-up of floated travel drawings on silk mat with shadow line detail, custom picture framing San Francisco Underglass

Underglass Cutom Picture Framing has been in the Castro for over 40 years. In that time we have framed a lot of San Francisco: its history, its art, its people and the things they bring back from the places they have been. It never gets old. And sometimes a piece comes in that reminds us exactly why we do this.

Andrea is a Bay Area artist who creates illustrations inspired by her life as a wanderer and a traveler. Her character is a cat, always dressed for the destination, always carrying the feeling of a place in a way that only someone who has really lived in it can capture. She draws the fleeting moments, the tiny emotions, the things you remember long after the trip is over.

One of the drawings in this set is the Golden Gate Bridge. That one hits a little differently when you are standing in a frame shop three miles away.

What the piece needed

A collection of travel drawings like this called for a design that matched the spirit of the work. Playful, personal, a little wandering itself.

We floated each drawing on a silk mat with a beautiful texture that plays off the black lines in the illustrations and gives the whole collection a rich, warm contrast. Floating the pieces means every drawing sits slightly forward from the mat surface, with a shadow line around it that gives the collection depth and makes each illustration feel like its own small world.

For the frame we chose an off-white profile with scuff marks worked into the finish. That worn, slightly imperfect quality mirrors the whimsy in Andrea’s drawings perfectly. It is the kind of frame that does not take itself too seriously, and neither does the art.

Why this kind of project matters to us

The team here at Underglass has always believed that custom framing is for everyone and everything. Not just for fine art, not just for expensive pieces, not just for things with obvious monetary value. For the drawings you love, the postcards you kept, the maps you brought home, the photographs from the trip that changed something in you.

Andrea’s drawings are exactly that kind of piece. They hold memories, they carry a personal story, and they capture something true about what it feels like to move through the world with curiosity and an open heart. That is worth putting on a wall.

Our clients in San Francisco and the Bay Area have trusted us with pieces like these for over four decades. The team here knows how to listen to what a piece needs and how to design around it. That relationship with our community is something we are genuinely proud of and something we never take for granted.
