Some projects come with a clear direction from the start.

This vibrant canvas of sunflowers and blue irises was one of them. Our client wanted to keep the full edge of the stretched canvas visible while still creating a finished, structured frame.
In our custom framing San Francisco work, this often leads to a layered approach.
We started by floating the canvas in a white floater frame. This keeps the painting visually open and allows the full depth of the stretcher to remain visible.
From there, we nested the floater within a natural oiled walnut frame. This adds warmth and structure without closing in the piece.
To bring the two elements together, we added a worn silver fillet. This small detail creates a clean transition and introduces a subtle point of contrast.
As a result, the framing feels intentional while still letting the painting lead.
Custom Framing San Francisco – A Layered Approach

Our approach to custom framing in San Francisco often comes down to building in layers. Each element has a role, but no single part should take over.
For example, the floater frame keeps the canvas visible. At the same time, the outer walnut frame gives the piece a stronger presence on the wall.
Because of this, the structure feels balanced rather than heavy.
At Underglass Custom Framing in San Francisco’s Castro District, we work closely with our clients throughout the process. In this case, the direction was clear, and we focused on refining the details.
Custom framing in San Francisco becomes a collaboration. The best results often come from combining a clear vision with thoughtful execution.
Museum-Quality Materials
As with all of our custom framing in San Francisco, we use conservation materials to protect the artwork.
For this piece, we used:
- Archival framing methods to support the canvas
- Optium Museum Acrylic for clarity and protection
- 99% UV protection to help preserve color over time
And if you don’t see any glass on this, it’s because we used Optium Museum Acrylic. It offers excellent clarity, reduces most reflections, and helps protect the artwork from harmful UV exposure.
