Some pieces carry both history and a sense of renewal.
This advertising illustration does exactly that. The image of a deer with a tree growing from its horns feels rooted in tradition, yet visually current.
At Underglass Custom Framing in San Francisco’s Castro District, we approached this piece with that balance in mind. Our goal was to support both the legacy and the modern identity.
We selected an ebonized walnut frame to anchor the work. The material feels solid and familiar, which helps ground the composition.
At the same time, we introduced a layered mat design. A thick 8-ply vellum white mat creates a crisp, modern edge.
In contrast, a textured midnight green mat adds depth and connects directly to the tones in the illustration. This pairing creates a subtle shift between past and present.
As a result, the piece feels both structured and open. The materials work together without competing for attention.
Thoughtful Design in Custom Framing San Francisco
Our approach to custom framing in San Francisco comes from experience and perspective. We have been framing for over 40 years, but our process continues to evolve.
Our team includes working artists who think carefully about composition, balance, and material. Each decision is intentional and specific to the artwork.
At the same time, we work closely with our clients. We listen to what drew them to a piece in the first place.
Because of this, framing becomes more than protection. It becomes a way to connect the artwork to the space and to the person living with it.
Museum-Quality Materials
As with all of our custom framing in San Francisco, we use conservation materials to protect the artwork.
For this advertising illustration, we used:
- Archival mounting techniques for long-term support
- Museum glass for clarity and minimal reflection
- 99% UV protection to help preserve color over time
