Cartography piece with fine silver linework in matched gray rounded frame with float mount, custom picture framing Castro San Francisco

Custom picture framing in San Francisco means solving problems as much as it means choosing frames. At Underglass we have been doing both for over 40 years.

Some pieces arrive with an obvious solution. Others take more thought. This cartography piece was the second kind. Fine silver gray linework on off white art paper. Beautiful up close but almost invisible from a distance.

Reading the challenge first

The first thing we do with any piece is look at it. Not at a catalog of options. We take a good look at the art itself.

With this cartography piece the challenge was clear. The linework is so fine and so pale that it nearly disappears at a glance. The framing needed to help the viewer find their way into it. That is a specific problem that needs a specific solution.

The float mount and the shadow line

We floated the art on the mat board. Float mounting lifts the art slightly forward from the mat surface. That small elevation creates a shadow line around the piece.

That shadow line is what does the work here. It draws the eye inward. It gives the viewer a clear boundary to follow toward the art. Without it the piece risks getting lost on the wall. With it the viewer finds it immediately.

Float mounting also means the full art paper is visible including the edges. Nothing is hidden under a mat. The piece reads as a complete object on the wall.

The frame: matched in color and texture

We chose a frame that steps away from strict minimalism. Slightly heavier, gently rounded and matched closely in color and texture to the silver gray of the cartography itself.

That color and texture match was intentional. The frame feels like an extension of the artwork’s world rather than a border placed around it. It adds presence without competing.

Forty years of experience tells you when a minimal frame could feel right and when a slightly heavier one feels perfect. This was one of those moments.

Conservation throughout

Every material we used is conservation grade. Acid free mat board, archival backing and museum quality glazing. For a delicate work on art paper like this, those choices are not optional.

Conservation framing protects the paper from UV damage, humidity and the acids that standard materials release over time. The piece looks exactly like this today. With the right materials it will look the same in twenty years.

That is the standard we hold ourselves to at Underglass for every piece, from the most valuable fine art to the most personal found object.

Trust built over 40 years

When you bring us something delicate or difficult, you are trusting us with something that matters. We take that seriously. Our team has seen thousands of framing challenges over four decades in the Castro. We know when to follow convention and when to find a different solution.

If you have a piece that presents a framing question, bring it in. We will look at it together and find the right answer for it.
