Custom Picture Framing in San Francisco: Why Concert Posters Deserve a Real Frame

Most concert posters end up in a tube, in a closet, or tacked to a wall with something that leaves a hole. A few of them are too good for that.

Custom picture framing in San Francisco is what we do at Underglass, and over the years we have framed a lot of posters. Music, theater, film, events. Pieces that people held onto because they were there, because the design is genuinely beautiful, or both. This David Byrne American Utopia poster from his run at Bill Graham Civic Auditorium is a good example of all of it.

The Poster: American Utopia at Bill Graham

If you saw the American Utopia tour, you already know what that show was. The poster carries that same energy: bold design, strong color, the kind of graphic work that holds up on a wall the way good album art does.

It came to us without a lot of complicated framing needs. The art is straightforward and confident. It did not need a mat pulling focus or a decorative frame competing with it. It needed something that added presence without getting in the way.

The Frame: Dark Gold Metal, No Mat

We chose a dark textured gold metal frame and skipped the mat entirely.

The frame has enough weight and finish to elevate the poster without overwhelming it. The texture on the sides keeps it from reading as plain or flat. And without a mat, the poster fills the frame edge to edge, which is the right call when the design itself is doing the work.

This is a decision we make piece by piece. Some posters benefit from a mat, especially when the image needs breathing room or when the borders are uneven. This one did not. The cleaner solution was the right one.

Why Poster Framing Is Worth Doing Right

A concert poster is not just a piece of paper. It is a record of something that happened, something you were part of. The framing should reflect that.

At Underglass we approach poster framing the same way we approach any other project: we look at the piece, talk through the options, and design something that fits. That sometimes means a simple frame and no mat. It sometimes means a full conservation build with UV glass and archival mounting. It depends on the poster and what you want for it.

For a piece like this one, the goal was to make it feel like it belongs on the wall of a home, not like it is still waiting to be dealt with.

A Note on Holiday Gifting

A framed concert poster is one of the better holiday gifts you can give someone, especially if the show meant something to them. It is personal, it is permanent, and it is not something they would buy for themselves.

If you are thinking about framing a poster as a gift this holiday season, now is a good time to bring it in. Underglass gets busy this time of year, and the earlier you come in, the more you get to choose from. Some of our mouldings are made to order at our vendors and take time to arrive before we even start building. The longer you wait, the more we are working with what is already in stock. We will absolutely still be taking on holiday framing projects in December, and we also carry a selection of ready-made frames for projects that need a faster turnaround. But if you want the full range of custom options, now is the time.
