Not every wedding memory lives in a photograph. Some of the best ones are written on the back of a playing card by someone who loves you.
Bella and Jacob came to us after their wedding with 80 playing cards, each one filled with a note or a wish from a guest, and a handful of polaroids, the bride, the groom, and the two of them together in a quiet, intimate setting. They wanted it all in one frame. Something they could look at every day and feel the whole day again.
That is exactly the kind of project we love most at Underglass.
Reading the piece before designing the frame
The playing cards already had a strong visual identity. Red and black, clean graphic lines, the handwritten notes from guests adding warmth and texture to the boldness of the card design. The polaroids brought an intimacy and a softness to the collection. Together they told a complete story.
We always start the design with what the piece is telling us, and this one was very clear. The red and black of the cards needed to be honored in the frame design. The polaroid format, square and intimate, needed to sit comfortably alongside the cards. And the whole thing needed to feel as considered and intentional as the day it was commemorating.
The design: a grid that holds everything together
We laid out the playing cards and the polaroids in a tight grid, each piece floated so it sits forward from the mat surface with a shadow line around it. Floating the pieces rather than mounting them flat gives the grid real depth and presence. Each card and each polaroid has its own space while still being part of a unified whole. The tightness of the grid means nothing gets lost and the overall composition reads as one strong, confident piece on the wall.
For the mat we chose white with a grooved red core line, a thin reveal of red that picks up the red in the playing cards and runs as a quiet thread through the whole design. It connects the mat to the artwork without overpowering it.
The frame is a ribbed profile that plays directly on the black ink the guests used to write their wishes on the cards. The ribbed texture echoes that mark-making quality and gives the frame a visual energy that suits the personality of the piece.
Why this kind of framing matters
There is no rule that says wedding memories have to live in a standard photo frame on a shelf. The most meaningful pieces we frame at Underglass are almost always the ones that do not fit a template. A collection of handwritten cards from the people who love you most, arranged with care and designed around the visual language of the day itself, is something that will mean more in ten years than it does today.
That is what conservation framing is really about. Not just protecting something from UV damage or humidity, and we always do that anyway. It is about giving the things that matter a permanent, considered home on your wall.
