We are in the heart of San Francisco and Apple is practically in our backyard. Tech culture is part of this city’s DNA and over the years we have framed a lot of it for the people who built it, live it and love it. Engineers, designers, founders, enthusiasts – they all walk through our Castro door at one point or another and they bring us the things that matter to them.
This GRID Studio disassembled 3rd generation iPod is one of those things. Every original component laid out in a clean grid, the logic board, the hard drive, the front cover, the back casing all deactivated, preserved and ready for the wall. It is nostalgia and craft in the same frame, and it deserved a setup that honored both.
Why a shadowbox and why white
A shadowbox is the right choice any time a piece has physical depth or dimension that needs space to breathe. The iPod components are not flat, they sit forward from the backing, they cast shadows, they have a presence that a standard frame simply cannot accommodate. The shadowbox gives each component room to exist as the object it is rather than flattening it into a display.
For the frame and the shadowbox walls we chose white, and the decision was easy. The white carries that soft, rounded Apple aesthetic from the era. More importantly, white shadowbox walls extend the open, airy feeling of the display rather than closing it in. A black cube frame would have added contrast but the whole piece would have felt constricted. White was the only answer for that clean Apple look.
Conservation glass for the long term
We finished the piece with conservation glass for UV protection. Tech objects like these are not immune to light damage and components fade, materials yellow and the crispness of the display dulls over time without proper glazing. Conservation glass slows all of that down significantly and keeps the piece looking exactly as it does today for years to come.
Framing tech culture in San Francisco
This is one of our favorite kinds of project at Underglass. Something that sits at the intersection of design, technology and personal meaning, brought to us by someone who wanted to give it a proper home on their wall.
We have been doing this in the Castro for over 40 years. In that time San Francisco has changed enormously but the impulse to frame the things that matter has not.
