Some works ask for restraint.

This lithograph, Homenatge a Joan Prats by Joan Miró (1971), carries a strong visual language: primary colors balanced with loose black linework and spontaneous marks. As a key figure in Surrealism and Modernism, Miró’s compositions often hold both energy and precision, which naturally guides the framing decisions.

At Underglass Custom Framing in San Francisco’s Castro District, we approached this piece with the goal of supporting that balance without adding unnecessary weight.

We chose to float-mount the full sheet, lifting it slightly off the backing to create a soft shadow line. This allows the edges of the original paper to remain visible and adds a sense of depth without interrupting the composition.

The artwork sits on a warm cream mat, closely matched to the tone of the original paper. This subtle choice extends the visual space and keeps the presentation cohesive, allowing the colors and linework to remain the focus.

To frame the piece, we selected a matte black wood frame. The finish quietly echoes the black ink in the composition, creating continuity between the artwork and the frame while keeping the overall presentation grounded and minimal.

These materials are especially important for works on paper, where light exposure and environmental factors can gradually affect the artwork.
