Minimalist photography often relies on balance and restraint, and the frame design should respect that same approach. This winter photograph of a single tree surrounded by snow is a perfect example of how thoughtful framing can quietly elevate a simple image.

At Underglass Custom Framing in San Francisco’s Castro District, we chose a warm oak frame with visible wood grain to add subtle warmth and texture to the stark scene. The natural character of the wood gently breaks the stillness of the photograph while keeping the viewer’s attention centered on the solitary tree.

To stay true to the minimalist feel of the artwork, we skipped the traditional mat and used spacers instead. This keeps the design clean while creating a small sense of depth and ensuring the photograph never touches the glazing.

As with all projects at our San Francisco frame shop, the piece was framed using conservation materials and techniques. Our glazing options offer 99% UV protection to help prevent fading over time. For this photograph, we used Optium Museum Acrylic, which also minimizes reflections and glare while offering added safety through its shatter- and scratch-resistant surface.

With more than 40 years of framing experience in the Castro, our team focuses on designs that respect the artwork while protecting it for the long term.
