Poster framing in San Francisco is a popular services at Underglass. And some posters are simply too good to stay rolled up.
This one is a 1977 Metropolitan Museum of Art exhibition poster by Andrew Wyeth. It has been around for nearly fifty years. With the right frame and the right conservation materials it will be around for fifty more.
The design: clean, simple and respectful
The poster itself sets the direction. Andrew Wyeth’s work has a quiet, architectural quality. The aesthetic of the poster is clean and period-specific. The framing needed to honor that without adding anything it did not ask for.
We chose a simple white cap frame with a nice weight to it. The proportion of frame to poster feels balanced and considered. Nothing competes with the image. Everything supports it.
No mat. The poster sits directly into the frame. That was the right call for this piece. A mat would have added a layer the design did not need.
The spacers: elevation and intention

We used white spacers between the poster and the glazing. They serve two purposes and both matter.
First, they keep the paper from touching the glass. Direct contact between paper and glazing can cause sticking over time, especially in a changing climate like San Francisco’s. Once it happens the damage is often irreversible. Spacers prevent that entirely.
Second, they give the poster a subtle elevation because it gives the frame design a little depth.
Conservation framing throughout
We used conservation glazing with 99% UV protection. Nearly fifty years of surviving in the world is impressive. The right glazing makes sure the next fifty years are just as kind.
UV damage is gradual and invisible. Colors shift, paper yellows and the crisp lines of a print like this slowly lose their definition. Conservation glazing stops that process. You see the poster exactly as it is and it stays that way.

The poster you have been meaning to frame
Most of our clients have something waiting. A poster from a show, a museum, a trip or a moment that mattered. Some have been rolled up for years. Some came off a wall somewhere and never found a new one.
This is the moment to do something about it. Proper framing takes a poster from a tube in a closet to a piece of art on your wall. The difference is everything.
If you have a poster waiting for its frame, bring it into our Castro shop. We have been doing this for over 40 years and we know exactly what to do with it.
