Pencil-signed Stolzenfels Castle vintage etching in maple frame with wide white mat, vintage etching framing Castro San Francisco

Vintage etching framing is something we do regularly here at Underglass in San Francisco. And one of the things we enjoy about it is taking an antique print and making it feel completely at home in a modern space.

Old etchings carry a lot of history in them.: Fine lines, deep contrast, a certain seriousness. That quality is worth keeping. But it does not have to feel heavy or dated on your wall. The right frame design changes everything.

Starting with the mat

This pencil-signed etching of Stolzenfels Castle is small, around five by seven inches.  So the first decision was to give it some room with a wide, generous white mat and a clean bevel.

The wide margin of white is a great visual element: It gives the eye space to settle before reaching the print. And it lifts the piece visually, making it feel considered and intentional on the wall rather than undersized.

The clean bevel is a simple detail but it adds elegance to the transition from mat to art. And the mat functions as a space between art and glass making sure those two never touch each other.

The frame: maple for a contemporary feel

Etchings have a harder, more graphic quality to them. The lines are precise and the contrast is strong. A heavy or ornate frame would have amplified that. We wanted to soften it instead.

We chose a maple frame with a soft texture, subtle wood grain and a light natural tone. The warmth of the maple works against the cooler graphic quality of the etching. The result is a design that feels contemporary and airy rather than antique and formal.

That is the balance we were after. The history of the print stays intact. The frame makes it feel like it belongs in a modern San Francisco home today.

Museum glass for long term protection

We finished the piece with museum glass. It filters 99% of UV rays and minimizes reflection to virtually nothing. You see the etching clearly from every angle and in any light.

For a vintage print this matters more than people realize. UV damage is cumulative and silent. Colors shift, paper yellows and the crisp lines that make an etching beautiful gradually soften. Museum glass stops that process.

A piece that has survived this long deserves the right protection going forward.

Antique art in a modern home

One of the things we hear often at Underglass is that someone loves a vintage piece but is not sure it will work in their contemporary home. It almost always does. The key is in the framing.

A wide white mat, a light wood frame and museum glass can take an etching from a different century and make it feel completely current. That is not about hiding what the piece is. It is about framing it in a way that speaks to where it is going to live.

If you have a vintage print, an old etching or an antique piece waiting for the right frame, come in. We will find the design that makes it work for your home.
