Some of the most beautiful fine art print framing we do in San Francisco starts with a piece that has a clear mood and a strong point of view. This limited edition print by Mexican artist Abelardo Favela is exactly that: a young man at the bathroom sink with his dog, a moon visible through the window, the whole scene bathed in a bold, vibrant red. Intimate, poetic and full of summer.
The framing: a black satin shadowbox
When you bring us your art to frame, we always draw inspiration from what you bring us. The boldness of the red, the intimacy of the scene, the poetry of the moonlit window. We wanted a frame that could hold all of that without competing with it.
We chose a black satin finish shadowbox. The satin quality keeps it from being flat or heavy, and the black gives the frame a quiet authority that lets the vibrant red of the painting lead. The shadowbox depth adds dimension and breathing room around the piece.
Float mounting the deckled edge

The print has deckled edges, the soft, irregular border that forms naturally in fine art paper making, and showing those edges was never in question. We float mounted the print so it sits suspended slightly away from the mat, the full deckled border visible on all sides. The result is that the print reads as an object, a complete thing with its own presence, rather than just an image behind glass.
The shadow line created by the float mount adds movement and dimension that suits the poetic quality of the scene beautifully.
We used hand-made Japanese washi hinges, fully reversible, so the print can always be re-mounted without any damage to the paper. Museum quality throughout.
Summer vibes, year round
There is something about this piece that holds a summer feeling no matter what time of year you look at it. The moon, the warmth of the red, the easy intimacy of the scene; Favela had a gift for painting moments that feel like they belong to a long, unhurried evening, and this one is no exception.
