Custom Picture Framing in San Francisco: How We Framed a Mosaic Dog Portrait at Underglass

Fall has a way of making you look at your walls differently.

The light changes, the evenings get quieter, and somewhere in that shift you notice the print leaning against the bookshelf. The photograph still in its shipping envelope. The piece you love that has never quite had a home. Custom picture framing in San Francisco is what we do at Underglass, and fall is the season when people finally bring those pieces in.

This one was worth the wait.

The Piece: A Pull Between Two Worlds

The artwork arrived as a modern watercolor with a mosaic at its center: a beloved dog rendered in gold and yellow tiles, set against loose washes of teal and blue. Soft and painterly in the background, structured and geometric in the portrait itself.

That tension is what makes the piece work. And it is exactly what the framing had to hold.

The Design: Built Around the Contradiction

When a piece has two distinct visual languages, the framing has to speak to both without flattening either one.

We started with a suede mat as the main field. Suede has a textile surface that echoes the soft, layered quality of watercolor without competing with it. Against the harder lines of the mosaic, it provides a landing place for the eye. A second, darker mat floats beneath it, revealed by just a quarter inch. That sliver of depth reinforces the float and adds a shadow line that gives the whole composition more dimension.

The frame is Oregon-made, with a diamond and spike pattern that mirrors the geometry at the center of the portrait. This is the detail that ties everything together. When a frame picks up the visual language of the art inside it, it stops functioning as a border and becomes part of the piece itself.

Conservation Framing, Done Right

The artwork deserved the highest level of protection we offer, and that is what it got.

Every material is museum quality. Archival backing board. Hand-torn Japanese hinges, which are reversible and will never damage the paper over time. Optium Museum Acrylic for the glazing: 99% UV filtering, virtually no reflection, and shatter-proof so there is no risk of broken glass near the artwork.

Reversible conservation framing means the piece can be unframed decades from now without any trace of damage. For a portrait this meaningful, that matters.

Fall Is the Right Time

There is something about this season that makes framing feel urgent in the best way. The walls of your home feel more present when you are spending more time inside them. The pieces you have been meaning to frame start asking for your attention again.

At Underglass, we are here for your next framing projects. If you are thinking about a piece for the holidays, or simply want something beautiful on the wall before the year ends, now is the time to bring it in.
